Debate:

"This House Believes We should never have left the Empire"

The Literary and Debating society, in conjunction with Young Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein held a debate in JH2 during April 2006 under the motion : " This House Believes We should never have left the Empire".

Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein joined with a Debating Society member in arguing against the motion while the UUP's Michael Copland joined with three Debting society members in proposing the argument.

Deputy Fegus O'Dowd spoke on behalf of Fine Gael, Deputy Jim Glennon for Fianna Fail while Paul Hogan of Athlone Town Council represented Sinn Fein. Following the well attended debate the motion as defeated overwhelmingly! Lit & Deb President Niamh Gargon thanked the three parties on campus for helping to organise the event and their individual speakers.
