Maynooth Young Fine Gael E.G.M
9th October 2006

On Monday evening 9th October, Maynooth YFG hosted its annual E.G.M in JH4. The 2006 EGM proved to be a great start for another year of fun and political activity. The meeting opened with chairperson Mel Farrell's address. YFG present Elizabeth Munnelly also attended as guest chairperson. The chairperson in his opening words welcomed new members to YFG and spoke of past and future events. Mel spoke briefly on recent current affairs in the news and outlined some of the key principles of Fine Gael. In his words, in joining YFG or Fine Gael one is joining a "party of integrity". Recent events including the Michael Collins talk, which took place the previous week, and future plans including the following weeks Dáil trip were also mentioned.

After the chairperson's address, the secretary, Gerry McGuinness, read the minutes of the previous AGM, and then the business of electing the committee for the coming year took place. In the interests of continuity, positions on the committe are left avaiable each year for new members to contest. These included the positions of assistant PRO, Membership officer and First year rep.

After all remaining committee positions were filled; President Elizabeth Munnelly addressed the meeting and remarked on the great presence of new people there. The YFG President spoke of the important role that YFG has played in the past as an autonomous movement that can often influence policy of Fine Gael and Government in addressing the concerns of young people in Ireland. She hoped this role would continue into the future. The Young Fine Gael President spoke of the benefits of joining YFG, in joining you become part of a "national, social and political network" which is growing all the time. Ms Munnelly spoke fondly of her time in YFG and looked forward to meeting and working with current and incoming YFG members in the months ahead. The YFG President was applauded by the group for her inspiring speech.

Questions from the floor were answered and occasional light humour was enjoyed by all those present. The meeting concluded and the evening finished with a drink in the SU bar.
